Beyond Business as Usual Conference 2011

reSET had a great turnout at its second annual Beyond Business as Usual Conference on October 5, 2011. Almost 200 people came together to celebrate, educate, and germinate social enterprise. Young professionals, students, educators, public advocates, investors, and social entrepreneurs came together to learn from each other and become actively engaged in making CT a hub of social enterprise.

The conference featured a morning panel of three leaders in the social enterprise sector. Kate Emery, CEO of reSET & Walker Systems Support; Robert Egger, Founder and President of DC Central Kitchen; and Cary Wheaton, Executive Director of Billings Forge Community Works answered questions from the moderator, Dan Haar Business Editor Hartford Courant, and the audience regarding social enterprise.

The conference continued with three concurrent workshops regarding social enterprise:

  1. Social Enterprise Structures
  2. Measuring Success in a Social Enterprise
  3. Bootstrapping the Social Enterprise

Robert Egger, Founder and President of DC Central Kitchen was the keynote speaker. His powerful speech ended with a standing ovation by the audience. Egger also received the 2011 reSET Social Enterprise Innovator Award and he assisted Kate Emery in announcing reSET’s Social Entrepreneur Award winners. The top winner at this year’s conference was GG2G, a company owned by Dayan Moore of Milford and Phyllis Fryzel of Wilton. The company makes handbags and other accessories out of salvaged billboard and restaurant seating materials.
